“America has its dream gardens, its parks of passions, where one thought, one obsession drives the builder (often a man of advancing years) to throw up structures as regularly and as randomly as a dog scratches for fleas. The irritation of obsession will never be satisfied; few of these parks were or will be completed. The very act of construction is the life force. When the building stops, the glory departs and we are left with the coral reef, perhaps beautiful to behold, but the heart is dead. It is then that the garden is most at risk, it can be torn down or replaced with roof-tops. Few of these gardens survive, and at most, are low-level tourist attractions….”
Gwyn Headley, President of the Folly Fellowship in England
Goal One
Stop Rooftops - Having seen the growth in Austin and the depletion of open, creative spaces, I wanted to slow the advancement of suburbanization of the Texas Hill Country.
Goal Two
To create things that don’t exist, but that should exist, at least according to me.
Goal Three
For the pleasure of learning. I enjoy the process and challenge of figuring out how things work, from building fountains to laying Chinese roof tiles.
I am often asked if it is “done” or when a section will be “done”. I have no interest in completing anything. I build at my own whim for my own pleasure.
